Career Highlights

Daley Thompson is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history. Competing in arguably the most demanding event in athletics, the decathlon, he dominated the discipline for nearly a decade, remaining unbeaten in competition from 1978 to 1987.

Olympic Gold, Moscow 1980
Olympic Gold, Los Angeles 1984
World Champion, Helsinki 1983
Three Commonwealth Golds (1978, 1982, 1986)
European Champion, Athens 1982
BBC Sports Personality of the Year, 1982

Born in Notting Hill, London in 1958, Thompson took up the decathlon as a teenager and won the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics aged just 21. Four years later in Los Angeles, he successfully defended his title, setting a world record of 8,847 points in the process. Only two men in history have won back-to-back Olympic decathlon golds, and Thompson is one of them.

His dominance was remarkable. At his peak, Thompson held the world record, the Olympic record, and the European, Commonwealth, and World Championship titles simultaneously. He competed across ten gruelling events: 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110 metres hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 metres.

Thompson was awarded the CBE in 1982 and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year the same year. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2000 and received a CBE. After retirement from competitive athletics, he became a familiar presence in British media, appearing on television as a pundit and motivational speaker.

Known for his charisma, competitive intensity, and famous celebrations on the medal podium, Thompson remains one of Britain's most recognised and beloved sporting figures. His after-dinner speaking engagements are renowned for their energy, humour, and candid stories from a golden era of British athletics.
